The Lacuna Archive: A Collective Memory of ESOTSM

The Lacuna Archive: A Collective Memory of ESOTSM

At Film & Philosophy, we believe that the credits are not just the end of the film - they are the beginning of the conversation. To accompany our screening of Michel Gondry’s masterpiece, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind on 6 April 2026 at Filmhouse Edinburgh, we are inviting our community to participate in The Lacuna Archive.

"How happy is the blameless vestal’s lot! The world forgetting, by the world forgot." (Alexander Pope)
"Blessed are the forgetful, for they get the better even of their blunders." (Friedrich Nietzsche)

What is the Memory Archive?

Inspired by the fragmented subconscious of Joel Barish, we have created a digital "palimpsest" - a space where thoughts are layered, preserved, and debated. Whether you join us in Room 3 and a half (tip of the puppet's hat to Being John Malkovich), reflect over a drink in the Cafe-Bar, or are joining the conversation from afar, your insights are the "data" we are seeking to preserve.

Unlike the characters in the film, we choose to remember.

How to Participate

The archive is organised into five distinct pillars. We invite you to explore each column, cast your vote in our live polls, and contribute your own "fragments" of thought.

  • Column A: The Ethical Angle - Is ignorance truly bliss? We debate the morality of the Lacuna procedure.
  • Column B: The Identity Angle - If the memory is gone, does the "Self" remain?
  • Column C: The Existential Angle - Is the ending a tragedy or a triumph of existential courage?
  • Column D: The Cinematic Angle - How Gondry’s practical effects and "lo-fi" aesthetic map the internal world.
  • Column E: The Void - A space for general reflections, thoughts, and responses to other participants.

Join the Discussion

You do not need an account to participate. Contributions are anonymous by default, allowing for raw and honest philosophical reflection.

  2. Upvote: ❤️ the posts that resonate with your own experience.
  3. Contribute: Click ➕ under any column to add your own fragment.

A Note for Remote Participants

The Archive is a "living" document. Even if you aren't able to attend the physical screening at the Filmhouse, the philosophical questions raised by ESOTSM are universal. We invite you to watch (or re-watch) the film and add your voice to the collective memory.

The board will remain open for a period following the event to allow for deeper, "slow-burn" reflection.

What would you choose to forget? Or more importantly - what would you fight to keep?
